Mastering the SuperMarket
I was walking through the supermarket today and I began to people-watch, no judging, strictly observation. Everyone had their list, their choices, and their personal hunger level. Most of us go in dreading the adventure in the first place and others view it as a time out in their hectic day. Either way, it’s something we HAVE to do.
Every time I come to the store I take note of hundreds of new alternatives that come available on every shelf. Some are good and some only look like they should be good, and no matter how you look at it you have to invest a bit of time to make sure your choices stay top of the line.
As I watch everyone move about their business I do notice that most people just want to get through this, they don’t want to look at the labels, or better yet, they don’t have time, and they don’t want to stroll about, they just want to get it done.
So, when you make it to your next SuperMarket adventure, try to plan it out a bit differently, the outer perimeter in most stores is reserved for all the fresh ingredients, your produce, meat, and deli items. This should be the quick stuff, you know what you want here, find it, and move on. Now, the interior isles is where it all gets tricky. This is where you will spend a bit more time, the best way to maneuver this area is to choose one item per shopping trip to do more research on. What I mean by this is to choose one thing, say past sauce. Go to that area and take a moment to compare labels, I am sure that there are new flavors, companies, and different products that you had no idea existed. Give them a “Looksey”, check it out, and make sure your choice of sauce meets the nutritional needs of you and your family. Remember, if you can not pronounce it and don’t know what it is, DON’T EAT IT. Read the ingredients of every package you buy, actually the prettier and healthier the label looks, the more detailed you should look at the ingredients. They have become super savvy to make the packaging ooze health so that you grab it from the get-go, and I know that you are smarter than that.
SuperMarkets should not cause you to stress, food is simply fuel, so your goal is to load up on items that will nourish you and your family. Food should give you energy, avoid the foods that will slow you down and your health and body will love you for it.
