Nutrition for the Entire Family
As parents we tend to juggle all the variety of flavors that our family desires at every meal. We do our best to make everyone happy but with that comes a few unhealthy choices in order to get everyone to eat.
First and foremost, get your kids into the kitchen, if they have their hands at helping you create a meal, they will start to take pride in the meal and they are more apt to try, eat, and enjoy. Now granted, this may not happen overnight, but it will happen and your children will open themselves up to new adventurous foods and will learn a few cooking lessons at the same time.
Your goal when meal planning is to create a balanced array of proteins (chicken, fish, meat, legumes, etc.), carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables, and good quality fats (olive oil, flaxseed oil, etc). Ideally, you keep the house clean of processed foods and the few processed items you do keep on hand provide as few unidentifiable ingredients as possible.
Keep in mind that nourishment equals a high immune system and growth for all of us, not just our kids. How you feed your family right now has an impact on how they will develop 10, 20 years from now. I realize packaged items are so much easier to provide to the family, but my question to you is, “At what cost in the future?” If you have been cooking a variety of different meals at each sitting, for each family member, it may take some time to narrow everything back to one standard meal. Involve the family, minimize the processed items in the house, and allow meal time to be a nourishing, fun, and bonding part of the day.
