Ok, all kidding aside, do you remember the Chia Pet from long ago? Well, Chia seeds are on the top of my Super Foods list. They contain 5 times more calcium than milk, more Omega-3 essential fatty acids than flax seeds or salmon, a wide array of trace minerals, and they are a complete protein on their own. Can you imagine receiving all of this from something we used to plant on our kitchen window sill? This is definitely something to add to your child’s menu of foods.

Whole Foods has a ready-made cereal called Chia Goodness or you can buy the Chia seeds alone and mix them into just about anything. With water they actually increase almost ten times in size, so you don’t need a lot to receive all of the wonderful benefits. You can mix them into yogurt, add them to your cereal, oatmeal, or even sprinkle them on top of a salad. And, of course, you can hide them in a smoothie. At the end of the day its all about providing your kids with as much nutrition as possible, play with this one and add it anywhere you would use a grain or seed.
